G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Onze opinie:
De eerste G.I. Joe-film had een redelijke cast met bekende namen en een regisseur die toch wel wat special effects-blockbusters op zijn naam had staan (Stephen Sommers die eerder o.a. The Mummy en Van Helsing afleverde). Echter, het verhaal was zelfs voor een actiefilm beneden alle peil, de personages waren van bordkarton en de effecten te duidelijk via computer geanimeerd. Gevolg: de film flopte. We dachten dat we daarmee dan ook het einde gezien hadden van G.I. Joe op het grote scherm, maar ziehier: G.I. Joe: Retaliation! Een echte actiester in de hoofdrol (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), Bruce Willis in een bijrol en dansfilmregisseur Jon M. Chu (Step Up) die de teugels in handen neemt als regisseur, het zou genoeg moeten zijn om G.I. Joe nieuw leven in te blazen. Dat is jammer genoeg niet het geval want waar de eerste film problemen had met het verhaal, is dat niet anders in deze sequel waarvan we de extended action cut nu op Blu-ray gepresenteerd krijgen.

De film begint met een samenvatting van de eerste film en dat laat al niet veel goeds vermoeden. Met reden zelfs. Het verhaal hangt met haken en ogen aaneen, is op geen enkel moment geloofwaardig en het enige dat we positief vinden is de originele vondst van een spelletje “chicken” tussen wereldleiders. Visueel is Retaliation wel magnifiek om naar te kijken en er is duidelijk geld gestoken in de special effects, maar sommige scènes – zoals het gevecht op de berg – mogen dan wel mooi zijn om te zien, ze duren dan weer te lang en je begint je al snel te vervelen.

De cast doet zijn ding, maar als je weinig meer te verkondingen hebt dan clichés, is er natuurlijk niet veel van te maken als acteur. Al bij al is deze Retaliation dan ook niet beter dan de eerste G.I. Joe, maar ook niet slechter. Met de hersenen compleet op nul is Retaliation een zeer middelmatige actiefilm die het vooral van special effects moet hebben, maar blijkbaar is dat genoeg voor de makers, want deel drie is op dit moment al gepland. Derde keer goede keer? Laat het ons hopen!

Now, as Cobra holds the entire globe hostage with a revolutionary new weapon placed on satellites orbiting the planet, it's up to the Joes and a trustworthy old friend to save the day..
